Cancer patients don’t want to go to an emergency room during a pandemic and risk exposing themselves, but they also don’t want to neglect their cancer care needs. When COVID-19 hit Houston, patients who typically came back and forth to Houston for care were not allowed to cross state lines or get on an airplane. They needed to speak to an educated provider about their symptoms, next steps, or just to check-in and check on the status of their next treatment. The Advanced Practice Nurses and nurses in this group immediately enhanced their hours 24/7 so they could answer these questions when their centers were closed or had reduced hours. This group of nurses provided a bridge to give their patients and families peace of mind, advising them when they could resume their care and about the measures we implemented to ensure they could do so safely.
